Tulum, Mexico
Where we stayed
Secrets, Akumal Riviera Maya
The resort was nothing short of luxury. We were waited on hand and foot by the kindest and most helpful staff. When we arrived in Mexico, we heard whispers at the airport that Secrets Akumal was the place to stay and the rumors were true. Rated the #1 all-inclusive, adults only in Quintana Roo.
What We Did
There is so much to do at Secrets you don’t need a reason to leave. From the three pools, seven restaurants, yoga, cycling, gym, poolside activities and excursions, the resort really does have everything you need.
We spent most of our time by the pool and eating/drinking. Every time we got up to move the umbrella by our chairs, someone sprinted over and insisted they move it for us. We had two wonderful poolside attendants, Benji and Roberto who reserved our chairs for us every day, brought us the food and drink menu and booked our excursions.
The service was outstanding and worth every penny.
The Beach
You can guarantee you will experience the most beautiful sunrise every morning just a short step outside of your hotel room.
There were plenty of lounge chairs and bungalows available, but you need to get there early as the best spots tend to fill up quickly.
Tulum Ruins
We decided to venture away from the resort for one morning to see the Mayan Ruins, we had heard it was a must see among the other travelers we had met and it did not disappoint.
The tour was as simple to book as a phone call to the hotel concierge who directed us to the tour company and they set everything up for us there.
Our tour guides, Lalo and Ivan were fantastic. We boarded an air conditioned 10 passenger van with snacks and drinks provided. It was a short 20 min drive to the ruins where they dropped us off in the market. From there it was a short walk to the ruins and then we began the tour. It was one hour guided and one hour on your own.
Lalo was an excellent guide and very knowledgeable about the ruins. His love for his country and its rich history was so admirable. We loved him!
Not to mention the views…
Marketplace
We chose to head back a little early on our hour alone to peruse the marketplace and pick up some goods. I ended up with a beautiful, hand-woven bag, some Mexican vanilla and a pair of emerald earrings.
We truly had the best time and will definitely be back!
